Abstract

The purpose of this research is to describe how culture is presented in three English textbooks for Indonesian Junior High Schools published by the Ministry of Education and Culture. Related to the research, the researcher used a content analysis study to reveal the cultural content in the textbook, this study also adopted two frameworks from Cortazzi and Jin (1999) and the framework from Adaskou, Britten, and Fahsi (1990). Furthermore, the procedures of collecting data were started from unitizing, data reducing, coding, inferring, and drawing the conclusion from calculating the percentage. Then, for the final result of the research, it can be said in these three English textbooks, the cultural categories and cultural dimensions are in imbalance percentage. For the cultural categories, the data show the highest frequency of culture is source culture. In the textbook grade VII, the data are recorded 64 times (85%), in grade VIII are recorded 68 times (84%) and in grade IX are 35 times (83%). Besides, the result has also shown that in three English textbooks, the highest frequency of cultural dimension is semantic sense. The semantic sense found 59% in the textbook Bahasa Inggris When English Rings a Bell grade VII, 50% in the textbook Bahasa Inggris When English Rings a Bell grade VIII and 41% in the textbook Bahasa Inggris Think Globally Act Locally grade IX.
