Abstract

Authentic material is one of the varieties of teaching materials used in teaching English which the aims are to imitate real-world situations and to bring the students into direct contact with real life. This research investigated English teachers’ perceptions on designing authentic materials in teaching English at junior high school. The aims of this research: (1) To analyze the information about English teacher perception toward the use of authentic materials in the classroom; (2) To investigate how the English teacher design the authentic materials for students; (3) To find out the teachers’ challenges and difficulties in designing the authentic materials. The data for this study were collected qualitatively through interviews, observations, and documentation analysis. This research was conducted at one of junior high schools in Kota Jambi, and three English teachers were chosen as the participants who participated in the collection of the data. This research found that the English teachers are familiar with authentic materials. They are also aware of the need for authentic materials in teaching English. They consider the use of authentic materials more interesting and fun also could encourage the learners’ motivation and interest in learning English. The challenges that were found by interviewed was caused by a lack of IT skill. Therefore, this problem makes all the participants feel challenged to learn more and improve their IT skills, as well as be a creative teacher for their learners.
