Abstract
ABSTRACT YantiIsmiyati, Exploring Lecturers’ Beliefs in Teaching of Oral Production Skills in Higher Education Institutions in Jambi. Promotor: Eddy Haryanto S.Pd.,M.Sc.Ed.,M.PP.,PhD., Co-promotor: Hadiyanto, S.Pd.,M.Ed., Ph.D. The study aims to explore lecturers’ beliefs, challenges, and targets in teaching of oral production skills in higher education institutions in Jambi. In this study, data were collected through a demographic profile of each participant and semi-structured in depth-interview with eight EFL lecturers from four higher education institutions in Jambi. All interviews were audio taped and transcribed for coding by using a constant comparative analysis method to identify the key themes. The data reveal that there are five major themes as lecturers’ beliefs in teaching of oral production skills; belief of language itself, belief of teaching, belief of learning, belief of teacher and students’ roles, and belief of profession. Therefore, challenges and targets of teaching oral production skills are also highlighted. Based on this study, recommendations for English study program were suggested to improve the quality of EFL lecturers. Keywords: Beliefs, challenges, targets, oral production skills
