Abstract
As English is compulsory for students in Indonesian senior high school, an effective strategy needs to be utilized to improve students' English skills. Students at senior high schools usually have different strategies to develop their speaking skills for communication purposes. Therefore, with the help of a school program, a students’ speaking skills theoretically will be improved. This study aimed to find out the English lesson activities in improving students’ speaking skills at one boarding Islamic senior high school in Jambi. This research utilized mix method research design to collect and analyze the data. The subject of this study was students of eleventh grade at one boarding Islamic senior high school in Jambi. From analyzing the data, revealed that there are two kinds of English lesson activities at the school: in the classroom and out of the classroom activities intended to all students of all levels at the school. There are two activities applied in the classroom, they are English course and public speaking. Then, four activities are applied out of the classroom, they are English week; Delivering vocabulary; English speech competition; and English oracy competition. The characteristic of the programs applied at the school is based on routines and habit. In short, as one of the modern boarding Islamic senior high schools in Jambi, the school applied those English lesson activities nearly as good as possible. Therefore, it could improve students’ ability in speaking.
