Abstract

ABSTRACT Gilang Dwi Rianda, 2021, An Analysis Of Translation Strategies Of Connotative Meanings In Short Story Entitled “The Long Rain” By Ray Bradbury. A Thesis. English Education Study Program, Faculty of Teacher Training and Education, University of Jambi. Advisors. Robi Soma, S.Pd., M.Pd. and Yulhenli Thabran, S.S., M.A.. This research purpose is to identify the strategies of translating the connotative meaning. In this case, the researcher chooses a short story by Ray Bradbury entitled “The Long Rain.” The short story has translated by a blogger named Orienheni from English to Indonesia. Therefore, the researcher wants to know how she translated the connotative meanings in the short story. The descriptive qualitative method was used in this investigation. pProcess of selecting, focusing, simplifying, abstracting, and altering the material that following the procedure for assessing data in this study: (a) the researcher examined the translation outcome. (b) The researcher obtained data by categorizing the translation strategies. (c) After that, the researcher classified the translation into positive or negative connotative meanings.After analyzed the data, the researcher found that the most strategy used by the translator is free translation. It found eleven data that used free translation, five data used communicative translation, a data used idiomatic translation, and three data used superordinate translation.After analyzed the connotative meaning of the story, it can be said that connotative meaning is a word or phrase with a board meaning. It cannot translate only look for the meaning from the dictionary. But, it should be translated based on the context or sometimes it needs to read the whole paragraph. Related to the findings of the research, it found that the translator frequently used the free translation strategy to translate the connotative meaning.
