Abstract
ABSTRACT Ellyna Ade Ervanti, 2022, The Effect Of Using Comic Strips on Students’ Understanding in Grammar At Sd Adhyaksa I Kota Jambi. A Thesis. English Education Study Program, Faculty of Teacher Training and Education, Jambi University. Advisors. Dr. Dra. Rosinta Norawati, M.A. and Reny Heryanti, S.S., M.Hum. Grammar is a set of rules that explain how words are used in a language. It can be hard to master. For English foreign learner especially young learners, study grammar can be really hard and bored. Based on that reason, it needs an interesting media or method of teaching-learning process. One of the interesting media to learn English is comic strips. Moreover, comics can teach students to infer meaning form the visual first. Comics must include pictures. The benefits of using comics to learning are certainly great, both in increase literacy and in addressing the educational needs of differentiated learners. Based on that reason, the researcher interested in conducting the research to know the effectiveness of comic strips on students’ understanding in grammar. This study is a quasi-experimental study. The data were obtained by giving test to the experimental class and control class. The test consists of pre-test and post-test. The subject of this research is student at fifth grade of SD Adyahksa I Kota Jambi. The students divided into two class; experimental class 25 students and control class 25 students. First, the researcher gave all of the class pre-test. Then, the researcher gave treatment to experimental class. Last, the researcher gave both of class post-test. After the data collecting, the researcher used SPSS 25.0 to analyze the data. After analyze the data it found that the mean of pre-test experimental class is 31.80 and the mean of post-test is 80.40. It means that there is an improvement of students’ achievement after taught using comic. In contrast, there is no significant improvement of students’ achievement who taught not using comic strip. It found that the mean of pre-test control class is 42.80 and the mean of post-test is 59.20. In addition, the result of sig. 2-tailed of paired sample t-test is 0.000, it less than 0.05. So, the Ha is accepted and the H0 is refused. In conclusion, comic strip can improve students’ understanding in grammar. Definition of keywordss: comic strip, grammar.
