Abstract
ABSTRACT Background: Infectious diseases that become health problems in Indonesia are diarrhea and infection. Staphylococcus aureus is the most common cause of infection in the world. Management of infection is antibiotics, but antibiotic resistance often occurs. An alternative that can be developed is the use of medicinal plants. According to Folorunso Olufemi et al (2020), green tea leaf essential oil can inhibit the growth of pathogenic bacteria such as Staphylococcus aureus. Hydrosol is residual water from essential oil distillation, hydrosol is produced more than essential oil, so it is also necessary to test the inhibitory power of hydrosol to find out how it compares with essential oil in inhibiting Staphylococcus aureus bacteria. Methods: Essential oil of green tea and hydrosol were tested for inhibition against Staphylococcus aureus bacteria with chloramphenicol as a positive control and aquadest as a negative control. Then the inhibition zones of each group were measured and classified based on the Davis and Stout 1971 classification. Data analysis began with the Saphiro-Wilk test and continued with the Levent test, because the data were normally distributed and the variance was homogeneous, the One Way Anova parametric test and Post Hoc test were performed. Results: The average diameter of the essential oil inhibition zone was 11.37 mm, the hydrosol was 0 mm, the positive control was 26.38 mm while the negative control was 0 mm. Conclusion: There was a significant difference in the inhibitory power between essential oil and hydrosol of green tea leaves. Keywords: Green Tea, Essential Oil, Staphylococcus aureus
