Abstract
ABSTRACT Anissya Putri Lestari, 2022, The Effect of Probing-Prompting on Students’ Understanding of Tenses at SMP Negeri 11 Kota Jambi. Thesis, English Education Study Program. Faculty of Teacher Training and Education, University of Jambi in Academic Year 2021/2022. First Advisor: Drs. Marzul Hidayat, M. A., PhD. and Second Advisor: Reny Heryanti, S.S., M.Hum. Key Words: Probing-Prompting, Tenses, Quantitative Research, Quasi-Experimental Research. This study is aimed at examining the effect of Probing-Prompting method is effective on students’ understanding in simple present tense, simple past tense and simple future tense. This research refers to a quantitative research approach. Determination of the type of research is quasi-experiment. The population of the research was 330 students from the eighth grade of junior high school in SMP Negeri 11 Kota Jambi and the researcher used cluster sampling to took two classes of the population that consist of 60 students, 30 students in the experimental group and 30 students in the control group became the sample of this research. The instruments of this research were pre-test and post test that contained 30 multiple choices for each pre-test and post-test. The researcher took the data during 8 meetings from 5 August to 31 August 2019. Finding the data the researcher used SPSS 22.0 version. After analyzing the data it was found that the mean of the pre-test control class is 36.93 and the mean of pre-test experimental class is 32.50. While the mean of the post test control class is 62.13 and the mean of experimental class is 80.7. In conclusion, there is a difference in the value of control class and experimental class. In addition, there was an increase in the experimental class mean. So, it has been proven that the use of Probing-Prompting method has significant effect for students’ understanding of tenses.
