Abstract

ABSTRACT Wardani, R Puji Kusumah. (2021) English Teaching at State Elementary Schools in Jambi: Schools’ Perspective and Teachers’ Agency.Thesis. Magister of English Education Program, University of Jambi in Academic Year 2020/2021. The first supervisor is Drs. Syahrial, M.Ed., Ph.D. The second supervisor is Delita Sartika, S.S., MA., Ph.D. Keywords : Indonesia, English Language Teaching at Elementary School, Teachers’ Agency The elimination of English lessons in almost all elementary schools in Indonesia after the implementation of the curriculum13 left Few schools continue to study English even without a central curriculum. This policy has become a long discussion among some teachers and educators in Indonesia. This writing analyzes the rationale behind the continuation of English in a few primary schools and how teachers describe their agency in designing and implementing their English teaching without guidance. Data was collected from previous interviews. Results found that demand from parents and society as well as the professional perspective from school leaders were the main reasons for some schools to maintain English as one of the subjects. In addition, teachers were found that they have not received sufficient training to teach the young learners and it led to the misconceptions of suitable material for the learners.
