Abstract

The objective of this study is to assess the competence of the students in English Education Study Program of Universitas Jambi in writing a recount text. This study is focused in quantitative research, that is using the descriptive quantitative design. The population of the study is consisted of 82 in English Study Program who are in their second semester in academic year 2021. The sample of the study is the students of English Study Program from three classes who take the same courses in the same year. The researcher used total sampling to take the sample because the subjects are less than a hundred people. The researcher used a writing test in online Google-form as the instrument of the study. The result of this study shows that the competences of the students at English Study Program in Universitas Jambi are not good. Based on the analysis, there were only 9.7% of students who good in every part of generic structures. 38% of students were good in writing orientation but 62% were not good in writing orientation. 14.7% of students good in writing event but 85.3% of students were not good in writing event. The last part, 39% of students were good in writing reorientation and 61% were not good in writing reorientation. The students also made some errors in language features such as the event did not placed in chronological orders, some of the students still used the other tenses than past tenses and the students barely used the adverbs, past action verbs and etc.
