Abstract
This research aims at describing students’ perceptions based on their experiences by using realia in writing English descriptive text at one of state junior high school in Jambi city. The researcher chooses realia as media to generate students’ ideas to write texts based on the real objects surround them. The researcher chooses realia as media because “Realia is a real object that can help teaching learning process. Realia is concrete objects used in class to create connection with vocabulary, which can stimulate conversation, and build background knowledge” Herrel (2000). The questionnaires were distributed to 30 students with 15 questions. The subject of this research was grade VII H in junior high school Jambi City. This study used quantitative descriptive methodology. The researcher chooses quantitative because that method was attempts to collect quantifiable information for statistical analysis of the population sample. And using descriptive because it was a powerful research tool that permits a researcher to collect the data and describe the demographics of the same with the help of statistical analysis. The result shows that the students gave their perceptions based on experiences using realia in writing descriptive text. The students perceive that realia can help them to describe something because realia be able to see, touch and smell. Students also perceive that realia is an efficient tool to improve their vocabulary because realia can help them to interpret the specific characteristic of an object. All of the student’s perception showed that the students answer the question based on their experiences by using realia in writing descriptive text.
