Abstract
ABSTRACT Putri, Rahmah Dian (2022). The Illocution of Smartphone Advertisements as Found on Youtube. Thesis. English Department. Faculty of Teacher Training and Education. Universitas Jambi in Academic Year 2021/2022. First supervisor: Duti Volya, S.Pd., M.Pd. and second supervisor: Nely Arif, S.Pd., M.Pd. Keywords: Assertive, Illocution, Illocution of Advertisements The study aimed to find out and to describe the kinds of assertive illocutions of smartphone advertisements on YouTube in terms of claiming, explaining, stating, describing, asserting, and informing. It was conducted by using the qualitative method. The data of this study were taken from utterances that appeared in smartphone advertisements on YouTube. The data were words, phrases, clauses, and sentences. Then, the data were organized and analyzed based on the theory of Searle about assertive illocution. The findings of the study show there are 45 data. From 45 data, 7 data refer to claiming, 18 data are explaining, 5 stating, 2 data refer to describing, 8 refer to asserting, and 5 are informing. Explaining is the kind of assertive illocution that occurs the most. It is used by advertiser to make word or phrase become clear. Describing is the most rare in the video advertisement. The advertiser persuade and convince addressee by using kinds of assertive illocution.
