Abstract

ABSTRACTS RESI AMALIA GUSTIN 2022, Challenges and Solutions in Learning English Speaking Skills during Online Learning: Perspective of EFL Female Students. Thesis. English Education Study Program. Faculty of Teacher Training Education of Universitas Jambi in Academic year 2021/2022. The first supervisor is Dr. Mukhlash Abrar, S.S., M.Hum. The second supervisor is Nunung Fajaryani, S.Pd., M.Pd. This research aimed to explore EFL female student’s challenges during online learning and to explain the potential solutions that EFL female student teacher did to minimalize the challenges. The site of this research was at one public university in Jambi. The researcher utilized purposive sampling technique in selecting the participants. There were 6 participants of this research consisted of 3 different classes who have been learning in speaking class. This research employed qualitative study with case study approach in one English teacher study program. In collecting the data, the researcher used interview and audio diary as data collection techniques. The results of this research indicated that there were several challenges faced by the students which influenced their speaking skills development. Those challenges were vocabulary, grammar, pronunciation, fluency, anxiety, nervousness, lack of motivation, feel insecure, lack of topic knowledge, poor connection, and lack of technological knowledge. The most prominent challenges felt by the students were grammar and poor connection. This research also pointed out that the participants used several solutions to handle their speaking challenges. There were 7 solution strategies employed by the participants. Those solutions were pronunciation practice, talking alone in English, memorizing vocabulary, practice with friends, asking the lecturer, entertainment platform, and language application.
