Abstract

ABSTRACT Averta, Chori, 2022. Thesis. The Factors of Students’ Anxiety in Learning English Speaking During Online Class at the Eleven Grades of One of Vocational High Schools in Jambi. Thesis English Study program, Faculty of Teacher Training and Education, University of Jambi. The first Supervisor: Melati, S.Pd.,MCC. The second supervisor. Dr. Mukhlas Abrar, S.S., M. Hum. Keyword: Anxiety, Learning, Online Class, Vocational High School, Qualitative. The research aims to determine the factors that make students anxious in learning to speak English during online classes and to find out how students overcome anxiety in learning to speak English during online classes and this study employed qualitative method. The participants were eleventh graders majoring in TGEO and DPIB. There were eight participants in this study consisting of three female students and five male students. This research was conducted in a vocational high school in Jambi. Data collection was done through interviews. The instrument usedwas interviews to collect data. The results showed that there were three factors that made students anxious in learning to speak English namely: affective anxiety, lack of confidence, situational anxiety. The results also indicated that there are four strategies that students use to overcome English speaking anxiety during online classes, namely: taking notes, memorization, independent learning, and positive thinking.
