Abstract
The objective of this research is to explore the students’ challenges and strategies in learning English speaking, particularly during the Covid-19 pandemic, in online speaking classes at one public university in Jambi. In this research, the researcher employed qualitative with study case approach. The researcher utilised purposive sampling technique in selecting the participants. To gain the data, the researcher interviewed 6 participants who had experiences taking online speaking classes and asked the participants to send audio diaries every after they finish having online speaking classes for eight meetings. The results of this research indicated that the students experienced some challenges that influenced their participation in online speaking classes, including linguistics issues (vocabulary, grammar, fluency, pronunciation), psychological-related issues (anxiety and low motivation), learning environment issues (peers and lecturer) and internet related issues (poor connection). Furthermore, students had some strategies to overcome their speaking challenges in online learning, specifically, self-management strategy (practicing alone and being well-prepared), helping from others (asking or discussing with friends and asking lecturers) and technological support strategy (benefiting Google translate, watching You Tube videos for more explanation and watching English movies).
