Abstract

Melfira Pratiwi Putri 2022, An Analysis of Students’ Perceptions Toward The Use of Technology in Non-Formal English Language Teaching at LB – LIA Jambi. A thesis. English Education Study Program. Faculty of Teacher Training and Education of Jambi University in Academic Year 2021/2022. The first supervisor is Drs. Adrefiza, M.A., Ph.D. The second supervisor is Melati, S.Pd., M.CC. Keywords: Non-Formal English Language Teaching, Students’ Perceptions, Technology This study aimed to analyze the students’ perceptions toward the use of technology in non-formal English Language Teaching at LB – LIA Jambi. The data in this research were collected by using semi-structured interviews and analyzed by descriptive analysis and assisted by the NVIVO PRO 12 application. This study involved 10 ELT students, 5 students from the ET (English for Teens) level, and 5 students from the EA (English for Adult) level. Then this study revealed two findings. The first finding is about the types of technology used by the students in carrying out English learning activities and the second is about the students’ perception of using technology as learning media. Regarding the first finding, there are two technologies used by the student to learn English learning activities, namely hardware and software. During learning, the hardware used is consists of smartphones, laptops, TV, and speakers. In order to implement the learning interaction, software such as Google Form, Whatsapp, Kahoot, Quizlet, etc were used by the teachers. In terms of perception shows that there are positive and negative perceptions toward the use of technology as a learning media. The positive perceptions are; 1) Technology can reduce students’ confusion, 2) technology makes students become more acquainted with new words in English, and 3) technology helps students’ to improve their understanding. Besides that there are also negative perceptions of the use of technology as a learning medium such as; 1) poor connections, 2) high costs consumption, and 3) it interferes with students’ concentration while studying. The results of this study provide an overview of the benefits of using technology and the various advantages and disadvantages that follow. Therefore, it can be concluded that the results of this study can support teachers or prospective teachers to take a different approach in implementing teaching and learning in the classroom and encourage students to be more effective in the use of ICT in ongoing learning.
