Abstract

Introduction : Hypertension is a disease that causes cardiovascular disorders. It is estimated that by 2025 it will increase to 1.5 billion people with hypertension, and an estimated 9.4 million people die from hypertension and its complications every year. This study aims to determine the factors that influence the incidence of hypertension. Methods : The design of this study use a cross sectional approach. The number of respondents was 170 people who were selected using stratified proportionate random sampling. The independent variables of this study were age, gender, family history, smoking, salt intake, physical activity, obesity and sleep quality, while the dependent variable was hypertension. Data were taken through questionnaires, measurement of blood pressure, weight and height. Data were analyzed using chi-square test with < 0.05. Results : The results of statistical tests showed that there was a relationship between age (p= p=0,000; PR=9,186; 95%CI 3,946-21,387), family history (p=0,000; PR=4,316; 95%CI 2,122-2,774), salt intake (p=0,012; PR=2,522; 95%CI 1,272-5,001), obesity (p=0,000; PR=4,480; 95%CI 2,208-9,092) and sleep quality (p=0,013; PR=2,761; 95%CI 1,289-5,914). While the unrelated variables were gender (p=0,113; PR=1,946; 95%CI 0,921-4,109), smoking (p =0,836; PR=0,844; 95%CI 0,375-1,900) and physical activity (p=0,188; PR1=0,471; 95%CI 0,194-1,142; PR2=1,089; 95%CI 0,477-2,485). Conclusion : In this study the distribution of hypertension was 28.2%. The most related variables were age, family history and obesity. It is recommended for the public to routinely check blood pressure and avoid risk factors that can cause hypertension. Keywords : Hypertension, age, smoking, obesity
