Abstract

Indonesia is a country that has high diversity. There are four types of crocodiles that are protected in Indonesia, one of which is the false gharial (Tomistoma schlegelii). Jambi province is a good place for the life of the false gharial. However, currently the population in nature is under serious threat and the number of individuals is decreasing. Over the past three decades, the Sinyulong crocodile population has shrunk by 30% due to habitat fragmentation (Bezuijen et al., 2014) and hunting has made this crocodile threatened so that this species has decreased in population and only survives in a few isolated rivers, especially in Sumatra and Kalimantan (Auliya et al. al., 2006; Stuebing et al., 2006), Sarawak and Peninsular (Bezuijen et al., 2004). From 2016 to 2020 there has been no research on the density of the false gharial in the Berbak National Park area. The purpose of this study was to calculate the density value of the false gharial in the Air Hitam Laut River. This research was conducted in Berbak National Park on the Air Hitam Laut River. The starting point of this research is 104º24”15' East Longitude, 1º21”29' South Latitude and the end point of this research is Air Hitam Laut River 104º20”45' East Longitude, 1º25”39' South Latitude. This research was carried out from July to November 2020. Data collection used the spotlight survey method. The best observation time is when the water recedes or the water level is low, observations are made from the downstream to the upstream part (Fukuda et al., 2013a). Observations were carried out at 18.30 WIB to 20.30 WIB, the observations were repeated three times on different days. Based on the research that has been done, it was found that two individuals of false gharials were at the age of children. So the result is that the density of the Sinyulong crocodile in the Air Hitam Laut River in 2020 is 0.04 individuals per kilometer. The density status of the Sinyulong crocodile in 2020 also decreased compared to the previous study in 2015 which was 0.13 individuals per kilometer decreased to 0.04 individuals per kilometer.
