Abstract

During covid-19 outbreak, the teaching and learning process is done by online learning. It is due to breaking the chain of the virus's resistance. However, there are some challenges experienced by the teacher when conducting online learning. Based on that reason, the researcher conducted research on the challenges that are faced by teachers during online learning and the strategies that are used by the teachers to overcome the challenges. This is a qualitative research. The data was obtained through an interview. The researcher interviewed three English teachers from SMA N 6 Merangin on different days and times. It is found that there are four challenges that are faced by teachers during online learning. The challenges are the internet network, the students’ presence, the lack of students’ motivation, and the limitation of time to deliver the lesson. Furthermore, to overcome the challenges, the teachers use some platforms during online learning, such as Zoom Meeting, WhatsApp, and Google Meeting. The teachers also used some media in the teaching and learning process, such as YouTube, PPT, and documents. Furthermore, research can make the video when doing online learning more interesting by using some effects, such as the background of the video in a Zoom meeting. Furthermore, teachers can use a combination of text, video, voice-overs, quizzes, and downloadable templates, checklists, and instructions to improve student motivation. This will make it easier to accommodate all types of learners, including visual, aural, kinesthetic, and reading/writing learners. Key words: Challenges, Covid-19, Online Learning.
