Abstract
ABSTRACT Prihartini, G. (2022). “The Challenges and Strategies of Novice Teachers in Teaching English Online to Elementary School Students: A Case Study”. Thesis. Master Program of English Language Education, Jambi University. The First Supervisor: Dr. Dra. Yelia, M.Pd. The Second Supervisor: Dr. Nunung Fajaryani, S.Pd., M.Pd. This current research is based on the case study-qualitative paradigm. The purpose of this research was to describe the novice teachers’ challenges and strategies in the first year of teaching English online to elementary school students during pandemic. The participants of this study were three novice elementary English teachers. The results of the data analysis produced three themes that found based on online depth interview emerged from the data: The positive outcomes found (Pedagogical Competences; Talking about knowledge and skill base training for novice teacher, how the novice teacher understanding students characteristics, the developed English curriculum to teaching online and the use appropriate platform during the teaching process). While, The negative consequences found (Contextual challenges; managing behavior and stimulate students’ interest in learning, psychological challenges; managing children emotions and motivating diverse learners), and environmental challenges; parents’ involvement in online learning and parents expectation). Then, The strategies used to overcome those challenges found (Giving teacher training for the novice teacher to improve their pedagogical competences and increasing self-belief as novice teacher through sharing session with expert teacher in the school and joining teacher training professional development). The results shown that it difficult to adjust English curriculum in preparing teaching material with the using the appropriate online platform and also difficult to manage students, but the novice teacher still arise in difficult condition and continued the online learning. This study hopefully can contribute for the school. It’s important that the principals or administrators of schools have to facilitate novice teachers’ activities which contribute to development of their professionalism.
