Abstract
This study aimed to explore and better understand the motives of the fresh graduate EFL student teachers continuing their master’s degree in English education at Jambi University and explore the EFL student teachers' plans after completing the study. The thesis used a qualitative study that uses a case study approach. Data and information are gathered through interviews. The study included ten individuals. They are the young EFL master’s' students in one of the public universities in Jambi, Indonesia, in the academic year 2020. The latter have just finished their bachelor's degree and continued to master’s' degree. The interviews run approximately 30 – 45 minutes for each participant. The study found that the EFL student teachers' motivation to pursue a magister degree was triggered by interwoven motivations, such as intrinsic, extrinsic motives, and pragmatic motivation. That motivation is leveraged with the enabling condition as the pre-condition to start the master's education journey. Additionally, among the young EFL master’s, the data found that they have different future careers in mind after completing the study. Their initial motives to continue the master's program influenced the decision to pursue their careers.
