Abstract
One of impediments in breeding programme of cross-pollinated species has been the high level of heterozygous plants within population. This results in longer period of the breeding process in order to produce homozygous plants using conventional techniques. This problem can be overcome by the use of haploid and doubled-haploid technology via aseptic anther or microspore culture. This review discuss the principles of plant regeneration mechanism through androgenesis and the factors playing key role in the success of the induction of microspore embryogenesis within an in vitro system. The success of plant regeneration via anther or microspore culture was influenced by factors such as plant genotype, factors associated with donor plants, cytological status of microspores, anther pre-treatment, the properties of medium used, and the environmental conditions where cultures were incubated. A number studies revealed that the response of anthers or microspore on these factors was specific, depending on plant species investigated. For this reason, there is no general procedure that can be universally applied on all plant species.
