Abstract
Increasing agricultural productivity by environmental manipulations is subjected to limited availability and support of natural resources. Biotechnology, therefore, offers a new approach to increase and maintain the sustainability of plant productivity through the utilization of biological systems within microorganism, animal and plant cells. A number of experimental success proved that biotechnology has a bright future and may serve as a complement for existing conventional plant breeding. Some of new development in plant breeding involving biotechnology have been the induction of haploid and doubled-haploid plants, protoplast fusion of two different genotype or even genera, the use of somaclonal variation as a source of genetic variation, in vitro mutagenesis using chemicals and physical mutagens, and the introduction of foreign gene into plant individual that is recognized as molecular breeding. All these will end up to the creation of plants with desired characteristics, such as resistant to pest/disease, tolerant to environmental stress, high quantity and quality of yield, etc. Despite of its advantages, however, plant biotechnology is associated with problems regarding scientific ethic, ecosystem stability, as well as misuse of the technology.
