ABSTRACT Nurul Fadila, 2022. The Challenges in Writing Literature Review for a Thesis Research: A Case Study at Master’s Degree Program in Jambi. Thesis. English Education Study Program. Jambi University. First Supervisor is Marzul Hidayat M.A., P.hD. and second Supervisor is Dr. Fortunasari S.S., M.A. Keywords : Thesis, Literature Review A literature review is a summary of previous studies on a particular topic. Literature review plays an important role in a study because it can determine the direction of the research itself. Writing literature reviews is not an easy thing especially for students that are in their final semester. The purposes of this study is to investigate and describe the challenges in writing literature review and how they overcome the challenges in their thesis. This study used qualitative approach and case study design. Technique collecting the data, the reseacher used interview and document. The objects of this study, who a final semester and already completed their research thesis. There are 4 participans in this study, the criteria are (1) the students who already completed their research thesis, (2) who defensed their thesis in thesis examination and obtained A score, (3) who majored in English study program (4) who were willing to participate in this research. The result indicated that participants find several challenges such as selecting relevant references or theories and having difficulties to understand academic text (vocabulary and sentences). On the other hand participants also have the way to overcome the challenges such as collecting and reading articles or journals related to research as well as searching or translating words and sentences.
