Abstract
ABSTRACT Sucipto, M. H. 2018. The Analysisof Common Grammatical Errors in Writing Narrative Essay of English Study Program Students at Jambi University. A Thesis, Language and Arts Department, English Study Program. Faculty of Teacher Training and Education of Jambi University in Academic Year 2017/2018. First supervisor: Drs. Makmur, M.hum, M.A and second supervisor: RenyHeryanti, SS, M.Hum The purpose of this quantitative research with survey approach is to reveal common grammatical errors in writing narrative essay of English Study Program students at Jambi University. The data were collected through writing test. 35 students participated in completing writing narrative essay test as the data for this research. There were twelve errors that this research reveals. They were verb-tense, punctuation, capital letters, word choice, spelling, preposition, pronoun, pluralism, redundancy, word order, article, and possessive case. There were 599 errors happened in students’ papers, and the highest amount of error occurred in verb-tense category. There were 303 verb-tense errors (50.58%). After that, punctuation errors took place as the highest number after verb-tense with 76 errors (12.68%). Next is capital letter error with 50 errors or 8.34%. Then, word choice error happened 43 times or 7.17%. Spelling errors happened 38 times (6.34%). Preposition error happened 21 times or 3.50%. Next, pronoun errors happened 18 times (3.00%). After that, pluralism error occurred with 16 errors (2.67%). Redundancy occurred 14 times or 2.33%. After that, word order errors occurred 8 times or 1.33%. Meanwhile, the smallest number of error occurred in article and possessive case category. Both have the same frequency and percentage which are 6 errors (1.00%) in article and 6 errors (1.00%) in possessive case. Based on related theories and previous studies, the researcher concluded that students made errors because of the lack of grammatical knowledge. The students also still got influenced by their native language which is Bahasa that lead them to made errors. Key Words: common grammatical errors, narrative essay
