Abstract

This paper aimed to analyze rhetorical proofs in Donald Trump's speech in the context of the COVID-19 countermeasure from the perspective of Aristotle's rhetoric theory. The three speeches taken as the source of data for this study were delivered by Donald Trump during the period March 1st, 14th, and 31st 2020. The videos are available on YouTube, the researcher carried out this study by using the descriptive qualitative method. The transcription of the speeches was analyzed by using Aristotle's rhetoric theory to identify the ethos, pathos, and logos elements of the speeches. the finding showed that ethos was used most frequently in trump’s speeches followed by pathos and logos elements. the use of ethos helped Trump in emphasizing his credibility as a leader of a country in effectively handling the coronavirus outbreak. The use of pathos was indicated to enhance ethos by showing admiration, confidence, friendliness, fear, and calmness. Lastly, logos was used to prove his argument about the Covid-19 pandemic with enthymeme and example.
