Abstract

ABSTRACT Nuryana. Hana. 2018. Teachers’ and Students’ Persectives on the Use of Bilingual in Communication at Alhidayah Boarding School. Thesis, Faculty of Teacher Training and Education, Jambi University. First supervisor: Yanto, S.Pd., M.Ed. and second supervisor: Susanah, S.Pd., M.Sc. Key words: Perspective, bilingual, Islamic Modern Boarding Scool. The objective of the research is to identify teachers’ and students’ perspectives towards the use of bilingual as students’ daily language at Alhidayah Islamic Boarding School for 24 hours, students’ difficulties in conducting the rule, and how the rule was implemented. This research used qualitative design. The participants of the research were eleventh graders and teachers at Alhidayah Boarding School. The data were obtained from interview and observation. In the interview, the researcher used two kinds of interview method proposed by Creswell (2012), they were focus group which was used to interview 9 students, and one-on-one interview used to interview 3 teachers. There were eight questions generated to identify teachers’ and students’ perspectives. Furthermore, in the observation, evidences were collected by recording all of the activities related to the use of obligated language (English and Arabic). Then, the data were accumulated, and analyzed by utilizing thematic analysis. The participants imply that mastering foreign language is very crucial, so everybody hopefully can get better education and job in the future. It also eases the students in comprehending the subjects in the teaching learning process. Some difficulties faced by the students in performing English are lack of vocabulary, less grammar comprehension, writing, and pronounciation. Meanwhile in applying Arabic, the difficulty is only on the use of the structure (Nahwu and Shorof). Based on the interview result, the students confessed that most of them preferred Arabic more than English. The participants also said that bilingual implementation help the students to understand easily the subjects in the teaching learning process. In addition, some weaknesses of this implementation also found such as the students lacked awareness to develop their own vocabulary, get less guidance and control from the language section, and the language section provided monotonous topic in muhadatsah program (conversation).
