Abstract

The aim of this research is to describe the readability level of the reading texts in the Passport to the World 3 textbook used by the ninth grade students. This research also employs descriptive quantitative research. In the collection the writer used cloze procedure test. Then, the data were analyzed by using descriptive analysis. The findings of research show that there are seven texts have the cloze procedure score over 60% and one text under 60%. They are Rose 80%, Hospitals 86%, Trouble at the School Library 80%, The Empty Pot 80%, The Lion and the Mouse 62,5%, How Cell Phones Work 70%, Dini the Heroine 80% and Fireflies 50%. After so the judgment score is in the Independent level and Instructional level. The texts are predicted to be quite easy; it means that the students are likely to be able to cope with the text alone. Based on the cloze procedure result, the researcher gets the average score of 8 reading texts is 73,5% so it can be concluded that reading texts of The Passport to the World 3 are in the Independent level because the reading texts are readable and understandable to the ninth grade students, and the texts are predicted to be quite easy. Therefore, the researcher takes a conclusion that this textbook is not appropriate to be used by the students at the ninth grade students because they can read them by their own.
