Abstract

Key words: freshmen, self-confidence, anxiety Self-confidence are very important for students in college. Because the method in higher education requires students to be active, critical, and creative in conveying ideas. In speaking, confidence is needed to make it easier to speak well. The ability to speak is closely related to the level of confidence in students. This thesis was aimed to determine if there is correlation between freshmen self-confidence and anxiety in speaking English in the English Study Program at FKIP, Universitas Jambi. The design in this study is quantitative research with type of correlation. The population in this research was taken from all students of the 2021/2022 Academic Year English Study Program at FKIP, Universitas Jambi with a total of 115 students from three different classes. And got a total sample of 94 students. The data was collected by using a questionnaire. The type of question used is a closed-ended question. Then, the data was analyzed by using descriptive analysis. The data collection was taken using a total sampling technique. In the results of this research which showed that there was a moderate significant correlation between freshmen self-confidence and anxiety in speaking English. This can be seen from the results of the value of Pearson Correlation which r-obtained is 0.406** in significance 5% or 0.05 with coefficient of determination is 16.5%. It means that the variable of self-confidence affects on the variable of anxiety in speaking English. From the result of this research, it can be concluded that the freshmen should be able to increase their self-confidence to decrease their anxiety in speaking English. It’s important for lecturers to encourage freshmen by providing stimulus or feedback.
