Abstract

This research focuses on evaluate how translation course is designed and implemented at the English Study Program at Universitas Tridinanti Palembang. The results of this exploration were then used to formulate modernized translation course by integrating new demands and standards from current educational regulations and concepts to improve design and practice of translation teaching in higher education. This research was designed as a qualitative research based on case study approach. The main data were gathered from interviews with 9 lecturers who teach in English Study Program. The interviews aimed to find out how they have designed, implemented, and evaluated translation course. Supplementary data were obtained through exploration of relevant learning documents, including course syllabus, learning materials, and students’ translation works. These data were analyzed by using theoretical frameworks that include current higher education regulations, concepts of translation and translation teaching, as well as theories of 21st century learning. The results of analysis show that the current implementation of translation teaching has presented several strengths that are in line with current educational demands, such as respect for learners’ autonomy, maintenance of trust between lecturer and students, intensive feedback for students’ translation works, and several other components. However, considering today’s demands for dynamic higher education that is highly relevant with real world condition, there is still a large room for improvement. Improvements can be inserted in each phase of teaching, i.e. designing, implementing, and evaluating. In design stage, giving student’s opportunity to get involved in designing learning scenario and to customize learning goals that suit their interest is an important approach that can be used by lecturers. In the implementation stage, several approaches can be used to cultivate not only students’ English skills and translation competence but also soft-skills considered fundamental for 21st century learning. These include selection of translation materials that can highly stimulate students’ creativity, critical thinking, and intercultural competence, such as advertisements and literary texts, introducing technology necessary for translation process, and giving variation in delivery methods, such as using project-based or case method learning, so that the students have opportunity to work collaboratively or with real clients.
