Abstract

Gadgets and technology have become essential things in our life; it has created unique tools and resources, putting helpful information at our fingertips. Technology also has a vital role in education; for example, several platforms can be used as a tool of online learning media. As one of the most popular social media applications in China, TikTok also takes a place in the international field, comparable to Twitter, YouTube, Instagram, Wechat and so on. Despite most of the videos uploaded in TikTok are intended for entertainment, most people can gain benefit from learning English in TikTok. Even though massive relevant studies have suggested that utilizing social media for language teaching can have positive effects on learning performance, limited literature shed lights on the use of TikTok for educational purposes. Therefore, this study aims to fill the gaps, exploring university students on how do they perceive the use of TikTok as university students’ learning media to learn English-speaking skills. Subject of this study was three (3) from the 6th semester students in English Education Study Program at a public university in Jambi. A phenomenological qualitative research was employed by conducting interview with the participants. From this research shows that the participants had a positive attitude toward a TikTok application as a learning media, the participants also expressed a strong desire to use a TikTok application to watch and understand all the content associated with basic English skills especially English-speaking skills.
