Abstract

This writing aims to examine what are the students’ problems usually experienced and the strategies students used in Listening for General Purposes Subject. In this case, the researcher utilizes the mixed research method with a survey design. This study examined 94 samples from the total population of 116 students in the English department in Universitas Jambi Academic Year 2021/2022. The instruments were a questionnaire with 19 and 4 questions for the interview. The result showed that students had several problems in learning to listen. First, the physical setting was the problem that most often interfered with students who were difficulty comprehending poor quality equipment while listening to audio (71, 3%). Second, students find difficulty to understand the meaning of words that are not pronounced clearly (68, 1%). Third, the audio played by lecturers in the class used British accent audio that was unfamiliar to students. Last, limited vocabulary mastery made students found difficult to understand the overall meaning of each question in the listening material. The learning strategy students used in listening class was to use prior knowledge they had (80, 9%) and try to guess by using a word that is familiar to them (77, 7%). Other strategies that students use in learning listening are to turn up the volume of the audio and repeat it until they understand the whole meaning of the audio.
