Abstract
Communicative language teaching (CLT) methodology, which comes with meaningful communicative activities, has been adopted in many education instances. Communicative activities require some extent of interpersonal interaction, such as conversations. Accommodating conversation partners that could provide a safe environment and reliable learning platform to practice conversation is really significant for fulfilling communicative competence. With some of the recent development in modern technologies, opportunities for conducting conversations without human individuals might come as an alternative solution. Modern conversational agents, such as chatbots, allow the users to engage in a conversation with a practical computer program that can process natural language inputs. The study aimed to understand the perspectives of EFL students regarding the use of chatbots in fulfilling communicative competence. The study used a qualitative exploratory research design. In-depth interviews are used as the data collection technique to collect the verbal statement from the participants, and thematic analysis is used for data analysis. The study collected 5 participants who were interviewed in the process. There was a communicative model which used as parameters on which the fulfillment was considered: socio-cultural, discourse, linguistic, formulaic, interactional, and strategic competence. The study showed that participants agreed that chatbots could be used to fulfill some aspects of communicative competence, as they noticed a difference in their conversational competence, linguistic, formulaic, and strategic competence. The study also found that chatbots can be used as safe, accessible, and flexible conversation partners that can be used at home as a complementary learning platform. However, a few participants also experienced some lack of socio-cultural contextual understanding and minimum interaction. In conclusion, chatbots can be used as English conversation partners to use to fulfill communicative competence with a minor drawback of the occasional lack of socio-cultural contextual understanding and minimum interaction. The implications and the suggestions of the study will also be discussed in this thesis.
