Abstract
Teaching and learning English vocabulary have a very important role in enabling Indonesian students to master English as their foreign language. If a person does not have a sufficient amount of vocabulary, he would not be able to communicate with his environment. One of the applications that can be used for teaching vocabulary is Duolingo. It is an educational mobile application and also a website that consists of many activities with a mix listening, reading, writing, vocabulary, grammar, with the option for speaking. Based on this, the purpose of this study was to see the usage of Duolingo effect on students’ vocabulary achievement as a language learning platform especially to English vocabulary. And also, the researcher wants to know the significant differences between experimental class and control class in learning English vocabulary using Duolingo. This study employed quasi-experimental study. This study used observation, conducting interview, and test to collect the data. Based on the result that is collected after conducted this research, here are the results: (1) there are differences in learning outcomes in learning English vocabulary between study groups that use the Duolingo application and study groups that are taught without using the Duolingo application. (2) Students' English vocabulary learning using the Duolingo application is more effective than without using the Duolingo application. (3) Moreover, the calculation of the effect size reveals that using the Duolingo application has a moderate effect on students' vocabulary. The conclusions of this study are teachers should be more creative to improve students’ vocabulary. And students now have a new media for learning English vocabulary: Duolingo application, it can be accessed anywhere and anytime, the students also have a duty to learn vocabulary not only depending on the material given in the classroom; however, they have to practice more at home.
