Abstract
Background: The prevalence of anemia in under-five children is increasing in Indonesia. Various factors can affect the anemia status of under-five children such as characteristics of under-five children, maternal factors and sociodemographic. The purpose of this study is to determine the factors associated with the incidence of anemia in children aged 6–59 months in Indonesia. Methods: This type of research was secondary research with a cross-sectional design. The data sourced from Riskedas 2018 data, with a sample of 1.614 children aged 6-59 months. The variables studied were the characteristics of under-five, maternal factors, and sociodemographic. Chi-Square Complex Sample and Cox Regression analysis. Results: The results of the study found that the proportion of anemia in under-five children in Indonesia was 38.4%. Risk factors for anemia under-five were the age, mother's education, and maternal anemia status. There was no relationship between gender, birth weight, nutritional status, health status, maternal occupation, personal hygiene, gestational age, family size, and socioeconomic status. The dominant factor was the age of the children (PR 1.96; 95% CI 1.52-2.52) after controlling for birth weight, nutritional, mother's occupation, mother's education, maternal anemia status, personal hygiene, residence, family size, and socioeconomic status. Conclusion: A younger age increases the risk of anemia under-five in Indonesia. It is recommended that mothers pay attention to consumption patterns and parenting patterns for children to eat balanced nutritious foods to meet iron needs, especially children aged 6-23 months who are generally still breastfeeding.
