Abstract

The background of the problem in this thesis was the researcher discovered in daily conversation, representative utterance, directive utterance, commissive utterance, declarative utterance and expressive utterance are often found. Each of those utterance has different form and function. An utterance has to be factored into communication activities as theorists recognize that speaker intent, sentence meaning and hearer interpretation are not always the same. The purpose of this research are to find out the classifications and the function of utterances by Soldiers in Lone Survivor Movie. The subject of this research was “Lone Survivor Movie” which is this movie is failed operation of American Soldiers to catch the leader of Taliban and the duration of this movie is 2 hours 1 minute. Characters in this movie such as Lieutenant Michael Murphy, Marcus, Danny Dietz, Matthew Axelson, Commander Kristensen, sergeant Hasslert, and all soldiers are interested and very amazing played as soldiers in operation like war situation. The methodology of this research was qualitative research; it was did not need statistic approach to analysis the material. In this research, the researcher did research about Speech Acts in Lone Survivor Movie as follows: note taking, recording, content analysis and draw conclusion. The researcher was analyzing the classifications of speech acts based on Searle’s ideas and the function of speech acts itself in Military’s Movie. The result of speech acts used by Soldiers in Lone Survivor Movie, the researcher found the classification of speech acts in this movie, likes : 76 directive, 53 representative, 23 expressive and 12 commissive utterance. Speech acts has others function beside to convey ideas and information. The researcher found the function of speech acts that based on the meaning of each speech act itself. directive has function that the speaker intended to get the hearer to carry out an action; representative has function that the speaker believes to be the case; expressive has function that the speaker wants the situation; and commissive has function that the speaker feels the situation. It can be concluded that the speech act that often appeared in Military Conversation by Soldiers in Lone Survivor Movie were directive, representative, expressive and commissive utterances.
