Abstract

ABSTRACT Background: In Indonesia, some areas are still classified as endemic areas for malaria infection, eastern Indonesia such as Papua, West Papua, East Nusa Tenggara, East Kalimantan and even some areas in Sumatra such as North Sumatra and Lampung. In Java and Bali most of the areas have achieved malaria elimination, but because of the easy transportation for population mobilization, it can lead to imported malaria. East Nusa Tenggara Province is one of the provinces that has the highest API rate nationally. In 2020, out of 22 districts/cities in East Nusa Tenggara Province, 3 districts/cities (13.64%) are free of malaria, 14 districts/cities (63.64%) are low endemic, 2 districts/cities (9.09%) medium endemic, and 3 districts/cities (13.64%) high endemic. The purpose of this study is to determine the factors associated with the incidence of malaria in East Nusa Tenggara Province in 2018. Methods: This research was an analytical quantitative method with a Cross Sectional research design that used some of the 2018 Basic Health Research data. The population in this study is all people living in East Nusa Tenggara Province. The number of samples in this study were 3,746 people. The variables in this study were the incidence of malaria, gender, age, education, occupation, number of house members, residence, house ventilation installed with mosquito netting, use of mosquito nets, and use of insect repellent. Results: Based on the results of the study, the variables that were significantly correlated with the incidence of malaria were gender (p-value= 0.004; PR= 1.23), age (p-value= 0.031; PR= 1.45), occupation (p-value= 0.002; PR=1.32) and house ventilation was installed with mosquito netting (p-value= 0.008; PR= 2.31). From result multivariate analysis found that the risk factors that influence the incidence of malaria are gender, occupation and house ventilation with mosquito netting installed. The most influential factor on the risk of malaria incidence was house ventilation with mosquito netting (p-value = 0.023 PR = 2.33). Conclusion: There is a significant relationship between the variables of sex, age, occupation, and house ventilation with mosquito netting installed with the incidence of malaria in East Nusa Tenggara Province in 2018. The dominant factor for the incidence of malaria is house ventilation with mosquito netting. Suggestions for the community are expected to be able to install mosquito netting on the ventilation of the house. Agencies are expected to be able to provide indepth education to the public regarding the causes of malaria. Keywords: Risk Factors, Malaria Incidence, East Nusa Tenggara
