Abstract
The research aims to describe EFL Students’ readiness and strategies to do critical reading. This study used qualitative descriptive research. The research data were collected through interview via call on WhatsApp. The participants were 10 students of English Education batch 2021 who were willing to conduct interview via call WhatsApp. In analyzing the data, transcription from interview were made and then the steps in analysing data are data reduction, presentation of data and drawing conclusion. The research data show that the EFL students were not ready in doing critical reading. The reasons are they still lack of understanding of critical reading and unfamiliar words in academic text that made them difficult to understand the text. Beside that, there are some preparations made by students and this preparation can be further deepened to prepare them better in doing critical reading so that they can be ready to do critical reading, and are able to deal with all types of texts in college, especially academic texts. In addition, there were strategies that can be used by EFL students to improve their critical reading such as differentiating facts vs opinion, synthesizing, summarizing, scan & skimming, paraphrasing, annotating, monitoring, drawing conclusions, questioning and previewing. Based on the research findings and discussion, there are suggestions given to further researchers and lecturers. For future researchers, it is suggested to develop this topic and also use other instruments to see students' readiness in critical reading and for lecturers, this research can be useful as information about students' readiness in critical reading.
