Abstract

The purpose of this research was to find out about UNJA EFL Students' difficulties in doing digital reading during pandemic. It is a qualitative research. The research subjects were ten students from sixth semester of Jambi University's English Education Department that researcher select from pre-interview with students who have experienced in digital reading during pandemic. Interviews were used to collect data. The data were analyzed and interpreted through a qualitative procedure. There are 12 difficulties that students faced in doing a digital reading during pandemic. The difficulties are finding main idea in a text, lack of vocabulary, presenting information in their own words, lack of confidence (need people or tools), navigating digital reading source, integrating ideas in a text, lack of motivation, finding the most suitable reading source, the size of the smartphone, annoying advertisement, and internet access. According to participants, the strategies that they used to overcome the difficulties are using online and offline dictionaries, asking friends and teachers for help and skimming and scanning while they are doing a digital reading. Regarding students' difficulties and strategies in digital reading, students show that the strategies in digital reading are the same both before the pandemic and during the pandemic.
