Abstract

Bahasa Indonesia (Indonesian Language) is commonly used in foreign language learning classes. Bahasa Indonesia is considered a tool to teach the target language, especially in theoretical classes such as Reading class, Writing class, and Grammar class. The purpose of this research is to investigate students’ perceptions toward the use of Bahasa Indonesia by lecturers in EFL classroom. This research is a case study utilizing qualitative approach. The research participants were selected using purposive sampling technique. The researcher selected 6 English major students to participate in this study. The data were gathered through interviewing the participants. The results of this research showed that the use of Bahasa Indonesia by lecturers provided some benefits for students, for example, helping students’ comprehension, preventing time consuming, making material delivered more accurately, and Bahasa Indonesia could be tool in addressing students’ ability in English. The use of Bahasa Indonesia, on the contrary, limits students’ opportunity to English exposure.
