Abstract

The National University Debating Championship (NUDC) is a debate competition for national-level students that uses English. This competition is organized by the Directorate General of Learning and Student Affairs of the Republic of Indonesia. This research aimed to investigate the students’ speaking problems in the NUDC competition at Universitas Jambi and how do they overcome their speaking problems during the debate competition. This study utilized a qualitative case study with nine debate students as the participant of the research and use Zoom Meeting to gather the data. A semi-structured interview was applied in this research to gain data from nine students of batch 2020 who had at least already taken part in the NUDC Competition once. The study shows nine different speaking problems that the students experienced during the competition; vocabulary, grammar, nervousness or anxiety, being stuck in notes, pronunciation, unfamiliarity with the topic, blank, time pressure, and additional findings. The study also reveals how the students overcome the problems they experienced, by using common or similar words, use of filler words, reconstructing/paraphrasing, self-confidence, gestures, and improvisation.
