Abstract

This research aimed to find out students' perceptions of the use of code-switching in online games. The researcher used the descriptive qualitative method as a research design in which the researcher explained the data descriptively. The participants of this research were six students from the English Study Program at Jambi University that the researcher selected based on specific criteria. The result showed that code-switching in online games was common, to express emotion and as a characteristic of players. However, there are problems of code-switching in online games those are players did not have experience, unclear information, and incorrect terms and sentences that could lead to miscommunication. Also, the benefits of code-switching in online games are that it makes it easier to comprehend specific information and communication, learn new vocabulary, and feel confident. Also, participants got new experiences as well. They realized that code-switching could be a characteristic in online games.
