Abstract

ABSTRACT Divanca, Adinda Indah. 2022. An Analysis of Students’ Confidence in Answering Questions in a Discussion Section on Online Learning Through Zoom. Thesis. English Education Study Program. Faculty of Teacher Training and Education of Jambi University in Academic Year 2022/2023. The first supervisor is Dr. Ella Masita, S.Pd., M.Pd., M.Sc. The second supervisor is Dr. Yanto, S.Pd., M.Ed. Keywords: students’ confidence, online learning, Zoom. This research aimed to determine how confident students are in answering questions during online learning in online discussion sessions conducted via Zoom. This research used a descriptive quantitative method. The data obtained were processed statistically using Microsoft Excel. Then the results of the research are elaborated on and explained narratively. The researcher uses a reference to the self-confidence aspect stated by Lauster, P. (1978) in his book entitled The Personality Test. Data collection in this study was carried out using a questionnaire. Questionnaires were distributed to participants online. In the questionnaire, there are statements related to aspects of self-confidence. In this study, the reliability of the questionnaire was calculated based on the Guilford criteria with a Cronbach alpha reliability coefficient value of 0.8712. The researcher analyzed the data statistically by looking for the mean value and the frequency and percentage of the data. As a result, as many as 6 participants (5.7%) were at a very low level of self-confidence. Then there are 25 participants (23.6%) who are at a low level of self-confidence. Furthermore, as many as 33 participants (31.3%) were at a medium level of confidence. At the high level of self-confidence, the results obtained are as many as 41 participants (38.7%) which also shows the highest number of self-confidence criteria. Last, at a very high level of confidence, there is 1 participant with a percentage value (of 0.9%). These results indicate that the level of student confidence in answering questions in online discussion sessions via Zoom is quite high. Then based on these findings, the implication of this high level of student confidence allows the application of online discussions through Zoom as alternative learning to train students' confidence, especially in answering and expressing opinions in discussion sessions.
