Abstract

As taking JUELT is compulsory for students in Universitas Jambi, preparation needs to be known to avoid students’ failure. Students often do not know what difficulties they will encounter while answering the listening section of JUELT. Therefore, with the help of this research, students can be aware of how important JUELT preparation is. The research aimed to find chemistry department students’ difficulties in answering the listening section of JUELT (Jambi University English Language Test). The participants were chemistry department 2018 academic year students who have taken JUELT test. The total number of participants was 50 students. This research utilized a quantitative descriptive method research design with a questionnaire as the data collecting technique. The questionnaire was shared online using the Google Form media platform. From analyzing the data, revealed that there are some difficulties encountered by students while facing the listening section in JUELT. The difficulties include unfamiliar words, rate of speech, unfamiliar accent, unclear pronunciation, and recording quality. As for the factors of those difficulties, they involved the students’ background knowledge, lack of practices, and environmental noise.
