Abstract
This research aimed to explore undergraduate EFL learners’ challenges during online supervision and the strategies they did to overcome those challenges. The research was conducted in the English department at one public university in Jambi. This research employed a qualitative method with a case study approach. The participants in this research were ten undergraduate EFL learners who experienced supervision primarily online. The researcher used purposive sampling to select the appropriate participants based on the criteria. In obtaining data, the researcher interviewed the participants and asked them to send audio diaries after doing the online supervision with their supervisors within eight weeks. In analyzing the data, the researcher used thematic analysis. The results of this research indicated that undergraduate EFL learners experienced some challenges when conducting online supervision with their supervisors which were divided into two factors, namely internal challenges factors which consist of lack of motivation, lack of confidence, poor time management. Another factor is external challenges factors which consist of insufficiency support of supervisors, change of supervisors, supervisors’ negative feedbacks and comments, internet and technology problems, family environment. To overcome those challenges, the participants used some strategies that consist of self-management (self-study, managing the time in conducting thesis, maintaining positive motivation, doing positive and enjoyable activities, being pro-active), managing the supervision’s schedule, maintaining communication with supervisors, and having discussion with supervisors. Moreover, the participants also used academic and peer support (supervisor support, lecturer support, administrative staff support, peer support) and technological support (language application, referencing application, stable connection) as their strategies.
