Abstract

The present study aims to investigate and describe the students' difficulties in comprehending English reading text among Madrasah Aliyah students. Descriptive qualitative method was used to answer the research questions in the present study. The data was collected through semistructured interviews. The findings show that several problems cause students to have difficulty understanding English reading text, namely 1) difficulty in understanding vocabulary, 2) difficulty in determining the main idea, 3) difficulty in making inferences, 4) difficulty in looking for the detailed information, and 5) difficulties in locating references. Thus, the problem is caused by several factors namely: 1) lack of vocabulary knowledge, 2) difficulties in understanding long sentences in the text, and 3) unfamiliar sentences. Some suggestions and recommendations for better improvement in the future related to this research have been raised for further researchers.
