Abstract

GUSTI ASMARANI 2022, An Analysis of speaking problems faced by students during proposal seminar in one public university in Jambi. Thesis. English Education Study Program. Faculty of Teacher Training Education of Universitas Jambi in Academic year 2022/2023. The first supervisor is Dr. Mukhlash Abrar, S.S., M.Hum. The second supervisor is Robi Soma, S.Pd., M.Pd. This research aimed to explore student’s speaking problems during proposal seminar and to explain the potential solutions that student did to minimalize the problems. The site of this research was at one public university in Jambi. The researcher utilized purposive sampling technique in selecting the participants. There were 8 participants of this research who have been seminar. This research employed qualitative study with case study approach in one English teacher study program. In collecting the data, the researcher used interview as data collection techniques. The results of this research indicated that there were still several problems faced by the students which influenced their speaking performance during presentation. Those problems were vocabulary, grammar, pronunciation, anxiety, lack of confidence, negative response from other, lack of preparation, and internet connection. The most prominent problems felt by the students were grammar and lack of preparation. This research also pointed out that the participants used several solutions to handle their speaking problems. There were several solution strategies employed by the participants including focus on grammar, focus on vocabulary, practice and prepare. Key Words: Speaking Problems, Proposal Seminar, Qualitative
