Abstract
Writing presents a major challenge for most students in an academic context, both in their native language and in an ESL\EFL context. Linguistic and non-linguistic factors affect students' difficulties in writing. One of the affective factors is writing anxiety. The purpose of this research are to explore the causes of student anxiety in writing in online learning during the C-19 pandemic and to describe how students overcome their writing anxiety. This research was conducted at the English Department of one of the universities in Jambi. This study used a qualitative approach with a case study design, while the data collection was conducted through semi-structured in-depth interviews. Purposive sampling was used to determine the research sample. There were 10 students majoring in English Education as participants. The findings showed that there are five factors affecting students' writing anxiety, including linguistic difficulties, lack of experience in writing, pressure for the perfect job, time constraints, and procrastination. The research results also indicated that students have several strategies to overcome their writing anxiety, for example studying harder, increasing motivation, growing self-confidence, and developing critical thinking skills. Keywords: writing anxiety, online learning, causes of anxiety, students’ strategies.
