Eliza, Jihan. 2023, Psychological Challenges Experienced by EFL Students in Learning English. Thesis. English Education Study Program. Faculty of Teacher Training and Education of Jambi University in Academic Year 2022/2023. The first supervisor is Dr. Sri Wachyunni, S.S., M.Hum., MA. The second supervisor is Nely Arif, S.Pd. M.Pd. This study aimed to investigate the psychological challenges experienced by EFL students in learning English and the strategies they used in learning English. This research was conducted using a quantitative descriptive research design with the questionnaire as the instrument. The respondent of this research were 75 students from one of the public Junior high schools in Kota Jambi. The data obtained were analyzed using statistics and descriptive. There were 39 statements with 19 indicators; student engagement (11 hands) and learning strategy (8 indicators). As a result, three indicators of student engagement are indicated as psychological factors. Those three psychological challenges experienced by students are self-belief, motivation, and anxiety. Of 11 indicators of student engagement, only three were defined as psychological challenges. It can be categorized that students have a good level of student engagement. For the learning strategy, there were eight indicators of learning strategy that students used in learning English. Six of them knew techniques, such as Cognitive strategies (underlining and memorizing) and Behavioral strategies (test-taking, help-seeking, homework management, and note-taking skill). And two others were the strategy that students barely used (mind mapping and lack of time management). Students use a variety of techniques in learning. Based on the findings, psychological challenges could be the factor that influences learning strategies that students use in learning English because students with good engagement (lack of psychological challenges) tend to use various learning strategies.
