Abstract

A teacher in a classroom cannot always rely on standardized tests. It may not suit its local needs; it may not be available, expensive, and serve a different purpose. To meet the immediate requirements, teachers must prepare their own tests. Making a good test has not always been simple for teachers. Therefore, This study aimed to investigate the challenges a senior high school teacher faces in constructing a teacher-made test and the strategies that senior high school teachers use in constructing teacher-made tests. This research utilized a qualitative case study design with a semi-structured interview as the data collecting technique. The participants of this research were four English teachers in SMAN 4 Kota Jambi. The findings revealed that some challenges in constructing teacher-made tests are determining the level of questions suitable for students, Time management, then the validity and reliability of a test are also challenges for teachers in constructing teacher-made tests. Finally, to overcome the challenges, the teachers applied some strategies. The teachers' strategies are mapping, outlining, and doing diagnostics tests. Therefore, those strategies are expected to solve teacher challenges in constructing teacher-made tests
